This course will probably seem like quite a change of pace from your typical math course.  We will be reexamining many of the mathematical ideas with which you are already familiar, placing them in the context of the subject as a whole but in addition viewing them from the perspective of young students first learning them.  The emphasis will be on reasoning and communication.  Much of the class will be spent on interactive work, rather than classical lectures.

Homework problems will be assigned each class period, due at the Monday class meeting the following week.  Sometimes I will ask you to hand in the problem solutions by email - so be sure you have an active email account.  Homework problems count toward your final grade - roughly 100 points out of 300.

There will be an hourly exam on Wednesday, October 25, which will count for 50 points out of 300.  A project that will be due in December (with the deadline to be announced well in advance) will also count for 50 points out of 300.  A final exam, to be held during the assigned exam period on Tuesday, December 19, from Noon until 3PM, will count for 100 points out of 300.

Please take advantage of my office hours.  My offices are on College Avenue (the School of Arts and Sciences Dean's Office, 77 Hamilton Street, Room 206) and on the Busch Campus (Hill 540, on the fifth floor of the Hill Center).  You may also contact me by e-mail - my address is  beals@sas.rutgers.edu.
